“Wendy has my full support to be the next Mayor of Hastings. She truly understands the challenges seniors face, and she cares deeply about ensuring their voices are heard. I’ve seen her fight for accessible housing, shine a light on elder abuse, and lead the Positive Ageing Trust Hawke's Bay with strength, purpose, and sound judgement about what really matters.
I’ve worked alongside Wendy Schollum for over seven years on the Positive Ageing Trust Hawke’s Bay, where she has served as Chair. Right from the start, I was impressed by the way she leads our meetings. She is well organised, focused, and always makes sure everyone’s voice is heard. She’s committed to getting real outcomes for older people.
Wendy has worked hard to shine a light on elder abuse in our community. She’s helped run dozens of educational workshops and taken our concerns to central government, calling for better protections and stronger laws. She has also served alongside me on the panel that reviews applications from age-friendly businesses. In every role, she brings the same fairness and attention to detail.
She’s been a strong voice for more accessible housing. I’ve always admired her forward thinking. Years ago, Wendy was already raising concerns about the lack of accessible homes and what that would mean as our population ages. If we don’t act now, many older New Zealanders risk losing their independence too soon.
Wendy keeps our community informed about Council matters that affect seniors. She’s joined us in pushing for better processes around drivers licensing, supported senior housing solutions, and been a reliable advocate on the issues that matter.”
